Garden work by Moon phase

  • New moon

    Plants rest: don't sow or transplant. Good for weeding, loosening the soil and planning.

  • Waxing crescent

    Time for what grows upwards: sow greens, lettuce, cabbage, legumes. Grafts and cuttings take well.

  • First quarter

    Active growth: sow and plant above-ground crops — tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, courgettes, flowers. Foliar feeding.

  • Waxing gibbous

    Sap rises: fruit and berry crops, transplanting seedlings, watering and feeding. Postpone pruning.

  • Full moon

    Don't sow, transplant or prune. Good for harvesting juicy fruit and herbs, weeding, mulching.

  • Waning gibbous

    Sap goes down to the roots: plant root crops, potatoes, onions, garlic and bulbs. Root feeding, harvesting for storage.

  • Last quarter

    Prune trees and shrubs, thin out, deal with pests. Good for planting root crops and perennials.

  • Waning crescent

    Finishing work: tidying the plot, compost, weeding, preserving. Leave new sowing until after the new moon.

Fertility of the Moon's signs

  • Moon in Aries barren

    Barren sign: don't sow. Weeding, loosening soil, pest control, harvesting.

  • Moon in Taurus fertile

    Fertile sign: root crops, potatoes, perennials, planting trees and shrubs.

  • Moon in Gemini barren

    Barren sign: weeding, loosening soil, tying up climbers, harvesting.

  • Moon in Cancer very fertile

    The most fertile sign: sow and plant almost anything, especially greens, cabbage and squash. Watering.

  • Moon in Leo barren

    Barren sign: harvest crops and seeds, dry herbs, weed. Skip watering.

  • Moon in Virgo low fertility

    Low-fertility sign: flowers and ornamentals, pricking out, transplanting. Don't sow seeds for harvest.

  • Moon in Libra medium fertility

    Medium-fertility sign: flowers, legumes, fruit trees, climbing plants.

  • Moon in Scorpio very fertile
